How long have you been fostering, and how long have you been with Nexus Fostering?
16 months.
Why did you choose to foster with Nexus Fostering?
I did lots of research with my husband and read the Ofsted report. The fact that the central office is a 5 min drive for us was a perk! When we rang and enquired we liked how informative and helpful they were.
What did you do before fostering, and has this given you any transferable skills?
I was a secondary school cover supervisor in school and in teaching for 13 years. It gave me a huge understanding of how children’s hearts and minds don’t always connect, and children who are fight or flight are unable to function normally and control their emotions.
What do you think are the benefits of fostering, for you and for the young person?
The change in the children within my care watching them grow is great for me, and the child gaining confidence that families can be different and you can learn to trust adults again.
What did you find most rewarding?
Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces.
What is your fondest memory from one of your placements?
When I told the little boy in my care that his (adoptive) ‘Daddies’ had chosen him from all the other children, and he cheered.
If you could describe fostering in 3 words, what would they be?
A privilege, satisfying, a challenge.
How have Nexus Fostering supported you in your fostering journey?
Always been there to offer support and encouragement. Training is great and always somebody at the end of the phone.
What is the main message you would like to get across to someone who is thinking about becoming a foster carer?
The difference you can make to these children who have lived such terrible troubled lives. Make them believe that adults can be so different that their lives can be different.
