Winter in Cambridge – Activities for your family

25 November 2015

Cambridge is a beautiful place in winter and if you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this old city when it’s covered in snow then you are in for a real treat.

While some may hide away during the colder winter months, the families of Cambridge still have plenty of activities to keep them entertained until spring arrives. Here are just a few suggestions from the team here at Nexus Fostering:

The Polar Museum

What better place to embrace the feeling of winter than the Polar Museum? Your children will be amazed as they discover historical polar explorations which were full of danger, excitement and wonder. Hear about the escapades of explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Captain Robert Falcon Scott as they battled the extreme harsh weathers of Antarctica. The collection includes paintings, photographs, equipment, clothing, maps, journals and the final letters to loved ones written by those who didn’t survive the journey. The museum is open from 10am until 4pm Tuesday to Saturday and is located on Lensfield road. Entry is free.

See Cambridge By Bicycle

Cambridge has plenty of great cycle routes which means you and your family can stay active during the winter season. Cambridge Cyclist Touring Club is hosting a series of ‘Winter Rides’ throughout the festive season and encourages anyone to come along and join in the fun. With stops for tea and lunch, you and the kids can refuel before finishing the ride. You can find out more about the cycle rides on the National Cycling Charity website.

Ice Skating At ‘The North Pole’

The North Pole? Yes, Cambridge does have its own North Pole and it’s located in the centre of Parker’s Piece! This place is a child’s winter wonderland, with a 600sqm open air ice rink being the main attraction. There are plenty of other attractions on offer though, with fairground rides and Santa’s Grotto for the kids and an undercover alpine bar, Christmas market and festive foods for the adults! The North Pole is open from 20th November 2015 until 4th January 2016 and Ice Rink tickets cost between £4.50 and £10.95. The Ice Rink is open Monday – Sunday 11am – 9pm. You can find out more information here.

Mill Road Winter Fair

Organised by a small group of Cambridge residents, the Mill Road Winter Fair is a winter event that really brings Cambridge to life in the winter. With a carnival parade, food fair, market and craft stalls, art, music and entertainment, this is an event to get excited about! This year’s Mill Road Fair will be held on Saturday 5th December between 10.30am and 4.30pm on Mill Road in Cambridge.

As you can clearly see, the winter is no excuse not to stay active and have fun! This is just a taster of what’s on offer in Cambridge but there really is something for everyone if you do a bit of research. So don’t stay in hiding from the cold this winter, get out there with all the family and enjoy the winter activities while they last!
